I second what map says. Definitely learn scripting. Doesn't matter what app you use. Learn Mel, Maxscript, Lua, etc. It can be really beneficial when having to do repetitive tasks to script something that does it for you. I'm still learning Maxscript myself.
Might be worth looking into setting up a Maya MEL script to link into the "Reload Reference" command in the Ref Editor right-click menu, whereby it does an SVN Update on the referenced file through the command line, then reloads the reference - might save a bit of time if you're updating/refreshing a lot.

@Mark Dygert: Thanks! That helped me a lot. And the Link is great. Exactly what I was looking for.. This sheds more light to it. Unfortunately Red9 doesnt seems to work with MayaLT. Your low poly should have all UV border edges set as hard edges. This should resolve your artifacting, provided you are using a cage. You should probably grab this MEL script from Jon Stewart. It automatically hardens UV borders. http://jonathonstewart.blogspot.com/search/label/Scripts

You do, especially in production, when you have to create and test a bunch of modular assets set up with the power of 2. We had inhouse scripts with mel script, I was just looking for something similar with maxsxript. A menu or toolbar script would be fine. The UE4 Viewport was just an example.
How does the 3DS Max surface/normal/AO baker work? I have Mel that does this in Maya, but it goes by a naming convention. I'd be more than happy to guide you through what to look for to script this and how to structure it, but I don't have 3DS Max running on my comp.
