If you're going to use CAT, I would stay away from the biped preset, that seems to be the buggiest and the regular CAT human seems to be fairly stable. That's a Max issue, not CAT, some people say it works, other say it doesn't. Personally, the latest SP in 2012 actually fixed certain corruption issues.
CAT is nice but it is no wonder weapon. It allows for cool stuff for prototyping like the auto walk-cycle but at the same time it's a generalist approach. If your creature needs a very specialized rig, it's probably better to create it from scratch.
