I'm not sure if this helps anyone lacking a Mac or iOS dev license. I'm pretty sure it breaks the rules for real app development on iOS, so don't expect to sell on the app store using this thing. But it just might be possible to compile and push out a iOS app from Windows for testing purposes on a jailbroken iOS device...…
Yeah, Unity can't technically build directly to an iOS device, it instead makes a build that gets pushed through Xcode, so you can't really bypass apple on this.
For a long time Unity has had a basic free version which allowed you to create desktop, web, and recently Flash? games, but you had to pay extra for the basic or pro mobile versions to make Android or iOS games.
I didn't see this mentioned anywhere. The title says it all. Until April 8th you can save yourself $800 by grabbing the basic versions of Unity Android and iOS for free :D https://store.unity3d.com (Their server seems a bit overwhelmed atm. though so maybe try getting them later...)
Yeah gsokol, I wouldn't have heard about it either were in not for Google+ or Twitter. Those two are like game dev information overload for me. This makes me get excited about Unity all over again. Gah! now I really need to get ahold of an Android or iOS device...
Thank you! I was considering purchasing the basic ios license after tinkering around with the free version for a while. This just saved me big time. Now i can save up for the more useful (and expensive) features of pro. This is a great way to allow developers to generate some income on an app and use that to purchase the…
I know that feeling hah :D yeah it's just irritating you can't build to an iOS device in a tethered fashion purely to test. I think they should provide that feature for sure, but hey, it's Apple. Awesome of Unity to do this. Definitely gonna claw back some devs from UDK, or st least force people to learn both lol.
Ok. I submitted the news form. Thanks for reminding me about it I usually skip the front page and just go straight into the forums (old habits die hard...). EDIT: Whoa! neat my "order" finally went through. One nice discovery is that this deal also acts as a $400 off coupon for both pro versions of Unity Android and iOS.
