I didn't see this mentioned anywhere. The title says it all. Until April 8th you can save yourself $800 by grabbing the basic versions of Unity Android and iOS for free

(Their server seems a bit overwhelmed atm. though so maybe try getting them later...)

Thanks for pointing this out Ben, I would have never known otherwise. Do want!
This makes me get excited about Unity all over again. Gah! now I really need to get ahold of an Android or iOS device...
PS: Maybe submit a news form on the front page. I'd say this is news worthy. I've submitted several things though. I never see it go up and never get any responses... boo.
EDIT:
Whoa! neat my "order" finally went through. One nice discovery is that this deal also acts as a $400 off coupon for both pro versions of Unity Android and iOS.
And is it also necessary to have an apple developers licence to do so?
I had similar thoughts... I may take advantage of that =]
Anyone know?
Yes it can be a free license if you want to only test it on a simulator on your Macbook. If you want to test it on an iPad or iPhone you'll need to pay $99 for the license.
IMO it's worth it because nothing is cooler than seeing YOUR app work on the proper device. It's like christmas, it's awesome.

Yeah, Unity can't technically build directly to an iOS device, it instead makes a build that gets pushed through Xcode, so you can't really bypass apple on this.

All the best

awesome. nothing stopping you getting a mac once your ready to go live.
I'm fairly certain the licenses are permanent. April 8th is when the offer ends. Sorry for the bad title wording :poly136:
also you can trial the portable features as part of the pro trial. so there would be no point in this offer if it got cut off.
I wonder if this is them testing the water for a free release like they did with Indy.
I think it's a great opportunity to get a game or two out on the market to earn money to purchase the pro versions.
EDIT:
More speculation on my part would be that Unity 4.0 isn't too far off on the horizon. So they create a false sense of scarcity with the April 8th thing to get everyone who's even remotely interested in Unity to get the basic mobile licenses.
Many people actually use the opportunity to create some mobile games with Unity, they get hooked on it because it's a good engine. Those people contribute to the Unity community, some buy pro licenses. Then 4.0 rolls out and more people are interested in purchasing upgrades. Kind of similar to what project Messiah did, though in Unity's case with a better product IMHO.
I know that feeling hah yeah it's just irritating you can't build to an iOS device in a tethered fashion purely to test. I think they should provide that feature for sure, but hey, it's Apple.
Awesome of Unity to do this. Definitely gonna claw back some devs from UDK, or st least force people to learn both lol.
Let them know about your situation. Maybe they'll give you a refund, some asset store credit, or a discount on a future pro upgrade.
Not all companies are heartless money making machines. Good luck!
When the indie version went free they offered refunds to people who just recently purchased.
they send you an email with all the licenses listed.
I may need a couple extra licenses later this year depending on how things go.
I am starting up a small studio and it would help everyone testing their assets on the same tool. Right now you can only have unity running on 2 computers. Also you are not allowed to have one copy of a license and the rest of your team use a free copy. So If you want your artists just to test their objects in game you have to get them a license as well. No mix and matching of licenses
Exact same boat here.
