I simply don't think this is right. I followed all the steps in a tutorial but it's still not working. Also, I guess you're supposed to be able to simply see your normal map in the viewport, how do I set this up?
I agree, that does not look right. What tutorial are you referring to? To see your normal map in the viewport you need to turn on hardware map for the material. Its the 4th from the right button in the compact material editor mode. Click and hold button to change it from standard map. Click it to turn it on.
