To see your normal map in the viewport you need to turn on hardware map for the material. Its the 4th from the right button in the compact material editor mode. Click and hold button to change it from standard map. Click it to turn it on.
"DX display of standard material" I think is the same thing as using the hardware map setting. Not 100% positive, but the effects seem to be pretty close to the same.

Can't just add the normalmap to the bump node, or it'll treat it like an oldschool greyscale bump

Also I don't have DX display of standard material. What does it do?

Thanks, it works! It doesn't exactly show up as it's supposed though, I think it's sort of mirrored.
