doesnt look like a normal issue, looks more like a smoothing group issue. dont know what you would call that in maya, but if you set your mesh needs to have smoothing groups set, otherwise it will assign its own. (just did a quick search and i believe in maya its referred to as soft/hard edges??? maybe)
