Don't know any tree making tutorials. But you can give Tree[d] a go. It's free and its pretty easy to use and good for knocking up fast tree models. You can create your own textures for it and you have full control of the polycount and detail, etc. I used it in an architectural flyby. Came in very handy.…
If you've got Modo 401 then replicators might be a better approach than the tack tool. If you watched that video, imagine that tree as your branch which you then render onto a simple plane as part of your in-game tree geometry.
