well it works fine for me, so i think this is what is wrong. In the end of the shader attributes under hardware, you can choose what textures are visible in the high quality viewport. I haven't used the a view port renderer in maya but... Wouldn't making high end renders null the point of using a view port render? Wouldn't you have to make a new material and put it on normally to do renders?
