If you only have 1 light (sunlight for example) There is no need for RNM. But if you have lots of light RNM is a best choice. As far as i know no other render engine support RNM (Only turtle).
Thats right. I strongly believe you loose some color contrast using the "monocrome lightmaps". At least if your resolution is lower (you only have one color per texel) Here is an example of a simple viewport shader in Maya, baked with turtle using 3 RGB lightmaps.
