   ok issue resolved by using different machine to render...i guess something is just wrong with my copy of maya...

   Sounds like a preferences setup issue or potentially in loaded plugins. Doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with your copy of Maya if it's still rendering to any format. Just it's setup.
