You can render out viewport turntables or static image scenes with realtime shaders from the animation>make preview menu. You can get some quite nice renders this way, make sure you put AA to the highest setting in your graphics card settings, unless you have max 2009 which has gotten rid of the viewport AA for some…
or just take a screenshot from the viewport? i did most of my portfolio that way since it proved to be very timeconsuming to try and replicate shader-results with an offline renderer when all the maps were finetuned to work with the shader in the first place. max's confusing mateditor didn't help either. ;)
