My question is specifically about importing custom 3D assets into the Source engine, as I'm currently working on a HL2 singleplayer mod (in pre-production atm). Has anyone got any experience in importing models and textures with Hammer? Any tips or pointers?
Almost too many to post in one post... http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/ Home of Nem's Tools, lots of great stuff. - GCFScape for exploring and extracting Valves packed content. - VTFEdit for viewing creating and editing VMT VTF files (materials) http://www.wunderboy.org/ Home of some more great tools. - 3dsMax SMD…
I don't mod id games, but I know there are some resources around. http://www.iddevnet.com/ http://www.modwiki.net/wiki/Main_Page http://wiki.splashdamage.com/index.php/Main_Page etc.
If you're using Maya, you're in luck since Valve also uses it. The Valve SDK has all the plugins you'll need for exporting static and animated meshes. If you want to get into facial animation you'll need some other third party stuff, but I guess that's for later.
hah! wow Vig... wish I'd known that about collisions 2 weeks ago, was working on a virtual world in Source with a friend doing the programing and we tried 3 different work arounds before we found one that actually worked. I think we ended up using multiple objects and multiple exports for the same basic component. ugh. ;p
