   so, let's say you've got max running on one monitor and photoshop running on the other...you save your psd in photoshop and glance over to the model you're texturing in the max viewport and, for me, it sometimes updates immediately and sometimes i have to click back in the viewport to make the update happen. the issue is…

   Not with max's default shader. If you use an HLSL shader like Ben Cloward's, then it updates instantly everytime you save.

   Nope, I gotta alt-tab to Max to make it update. You might look into GhostPainter, maybe the speed has improved.
