oddly enough i just got it to work. converted the new blender hair curve system to nurbs curves, then exported as obj( curves as nurbs checked) and it actually worked, where previously it would instantly crash not sure if it was the particle curves that were not working, will do some more research
Not sure about Maya but in 3d MAx you have to check in "shapes/Lines" checkbox in obj import dialog . Then it imports as curves even edge based mesh from Blender. Perhaps Maya has something similar?
