I worked as a freelancer for the major part of my life and then only in a micro company, so this was never a concern to me, but I wonder: does it feel awkward to watch a tutorial if you work in a large company/corpo, in an open space environment? Especially if you're in a senior position? After all they're paying you to…
I remember on my first day at work in a AAA studio, I came in and the senior 3d environment artist was watching a standard substance designer tutorial. It's completely fine to watch tutorials at work. Just make sure you actually are working and it's helping you to complete your task. if you have spare time, sure, learn…
I had this concern as well and talked with my lead about it, he said that watching tutorials or even spending time just learning new stuff during at work is ok, because it is , after all, for the company's benefit too
We had a new artist running Game of Thrones fullscreen on their second monitor. "But having a show running in the background helps me focus!" Um no, haha! They got a bit of a talking-to, and so did the rest of the new hire cohort just to be safe.
if you fly under the radar by getting your work done right and on time nobody is going to pay much attention to what you are doing. if you cause problems then people question every little thing you do.
Not at all, this is an admirable trait and there are many people out there who simply say "I don't know how to do it", or worse yet, don't know and won't admit to it, and worst of all are too lazy to bother to self-teach. Good for you for expanding your knowledge of your own accord!👏
We've also had artists running non-work-related TV shows in small windows off to the side. They learn pretty quickly though, distractions don't help when you're consistently falling behind. Work is work, stay focused and get stuff done. Then go home and do whatever you like.
