I usually try not to circumvent Maya's internal scripts with edited replacements and utilize the hidden: dagObjectHit command instead to build my own marking menus that are contextually aware of object/component below mouse position.( leveraging Maya's original mouse button combination for viewport zooming:alt+mmb+rmb.
