I wanted to ask if anyone knows of any free video tool that can be used to study reference footage for animation on a frame by frame basics and has the always on top feature like Irfanview or kuardo(great tool btw) which only works with images. I have vlc but it does frame by frame forward only. Thanks.
Another great one is Kinovea. It's made for athletes who want to study their performances frame by frame, so it's perfect for animation references. You can also annotate the video and then import it as an image sequence into maya, so it's useful if you want to track the motion of something for instance. :)

QuickTime player allows for frame by frame scrubbing and if you're looking for an online tool there's http://anilyzer.com/ but it doesn't overlay the frame number which is annoying.
