   I taught myself through tutorials on polycount and through Google. Eat3D, 3DMotive, DT, etc, didn't exist yet. It's easier than ever to learn 3D modeling on your own now

   Now days you have websites like Digital Tutors and Youtube. All the knowledge is there. You just need self discipline to sit there and practice.
