I'm a complete stranger to Substance Suite, but it seems really tempting :) Just a noobish question, do I need the substance designer in my workflow to get the full potential out of Painter or is this just great as a stand alone application?
You can use Painter alone, as long you are fine by using bitmaps for your custom effects. However with custom substances you could create tools and brushes more easily that would fit a lot of different situations. :)
It's used in some way or another by a whole bunch of AAA studios out there and around 20k indies. We can't talk specifics but if you take a peak on our website you'll see quotes from Dice, Naughty Dog or Ubisoft as a small sample of Substance users :)
On a slightly related note, if you plan on using Unity 5 or are using it already you should cast your vote on Specular vs Metallic PBR workflow here: http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/official-specular-vs-metallic-workflow.274612/ As a Substance Painter/Designer user I feel strong about using "Metallic".
