I'd try the quixel beta or UDK then, both are more than enough for individual asset, and UE3 still can look just as good or better than titles being released on next gen consoles now.
Thanks! However, are you sure the render I 'll get with these are sufficient for a port-folio piece? As an extra, it's always nice to have stuff like bloom or depth of field..
You can still use UDK, there's viewport shaders, as well, and Unity free should work fine for your needs. The new DDO/Quixel beta has as a viewport and is free for now.
