David I think the part that you are looking for is the Texel Density of the project. For larger objects you will need to set a higher Texel Density for objects to tile better.
So ddo2 tiles the scanned materials across your uv's. As well as changing the texel density when you start a project, you can adjust the scale of materials that use images by clicking on them in the material shelf and moving the scale slider.
