Hey guys did a search for this but didn't find anything, im mainly a max user but have made the switch recently(3 days ago), I am exporting a base mesh from Maya to UV layout then to Zbrush, it seems to lose its creasing edges even if I bring it back into maya and do the edges again then send it to Zbrush as a OBJ, Am I…
Yeah, I use .ma to export a mesh with crease information from Maya to ZBrush. If you're using the crease set editor, just make sure that each mesh has it's own crease set, otherwise it can cause problems.
I import .ma files into Z. The only caveat to that method is that if you have multiple objects in the Maya file, only the first one listed in the Outliner will actually import into Z. Keeps all my creases and allows me to only have to manage the Maya file, not multiple-format exports.
ah awesome thanks for the replies guys!, was just following a tutorial and creasing is all a bit new to me, the tutorial I was checking out seemed to be dealing in creases with objs but it was as I suspected, thanks for the various work arounds.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure OBJs cannot retain crease data. You will need to send your mesh straight into ZBrush from Max/Maya using the GoZ pipeline.
OBJ does not support edges creasing, actually very few formats do, if you want to send to a other app like zbrush just apply the subdivisions, or use support loops instead
Yeah, and it especially becomes problematic if you're also using .OBJ as a high-poly file for baking in Xnormal or something. Then you've got a mess.....even with well-organized folders
