if you know blender you can easily adopt all the stuff done in max/maya to blender most modifiers only have a different name, but do the exact same thing
CG Masters has a DVD on environment modeling and texturing with Blender. BlenderGuru had a video a while back on realistic texturing too. I wouldn't be too afraid of dabbling in something that isn't strictly Blender to pick up some workflow tips. Texturing is pretty platform agnostic.
