Honestly my first thought was your keyboard might have some keys going bad. Sometimes I'll have an Alt or Shift stick while working in Max, and that can be a nightmare too.
Increment on save, not recommended on massive files but good for smaller 50mb pieces. Reinstall max completely. Clean install it, so no reg key's ect. That fixed several of my problem's that no-one had ever heard of before.
