I just tried the combined inset/outset tool, and space doesn't work. It does work in the other modes, though. edit: my bad! I had mine set to bevel/inset/outset. What's the difference, and how is this one supposed to work? To me it just seemed the same as the inset, as I can only get it to inset/outset, not bevel.
is the behaviour for inset -ax 0 i'm getting the intended : enter the tool. it remains active after inset. but the next clickDrag creates another inset. etc ? also. the cursor is a finger pointer now ? ( as opposed to the 4 way arrows from before ) it would be great if the effect was to : enter the tool. middle mouse drag…
ah. i see. only thing is you havent inset yet. as per your example you could even just loop, but insetting makes it a bit more difficult because of the 45degree edges. if you inset and then do the way you have suggested, then you'll get the inset edges as well, causing your connects to create a diamond inbetween each square

I was wondering if I could pick your brains on something. One of the things I always really struggle with in HP modelling is insetting details into subdiv geometry. I noticed here: That you seem to have your inset geometry seperate from the mesh it's supposed to be inset into. What's going on there?
