Welcome to Polycount (both of you!) I think your character concepts are great so far! One thing I always ask myself when reviewing concepts is... is this enough information for a 3D artist to reproduce the concept in 3D? And looking at your first couple character concepts, I'd say no. 3D artists need to see the character…
Hi guys, in previous versions of Maya if you held down "w" and LMB, you'd get a marking menu with various move options. In 2009 the "normal" option has been replaced by "normal average" which sucks if you're used to the old system. Now you have to go to "axis" and then "normal". The marking menu editor has no option for…
I'm working on some Characters/Items to submit to the Steam Workshop. I'm building them in Maya 2010. In the Dota 2 Shader Masks Guide it is stated that every hero, item, courier, and creep make use of 'the hero shader in Dota 2.' I'm wondering if anyone has made a material network for Maya, or has a setup for an external…
Damn, these ellipses look fine !! Can't wait to try them out :) Here are two new suggestions that came to me while painting today. Both might actually be achievable by cleverly tweaking some of the existing settings, but I am not quite sure how hence I thought I'd ask. - Full Pressure override (=no pressure sensitivity) Is…
Another solution is to ALT+LMB the mask for the layer group in Photoshop so the mask is visible. CTRL+A, CTRL+C, CTRL+N, ENTER, CTRL+V, then use the Magic Wand to select the white areas of your mask. Select -> Modify -> Expand -> X number of pixels -> Fill with white. Try to avoid filling over other areas of your model's…
Mass vs Volume I know how the terms are used in physics but in the art world they almost seam like they are synonyms. Anyone here with some traditional sculpting training that has an intuition for what exactly separates the two? I know volume is space, and mass is measurable (in physics).... Anyways, I know its not a very…
Hey Cody, Unless the Alpha of your mask texture contains the mask, you will see a solid result. There are three approaches to take here: 1. Plug either the Red, Green, or Blue channel from your mask texture into the OpacityMask slot (since each channel in your mask texture contains the same information, you would get the…
Rick: Back in around 1992 I took a vacation and went to bardstown kentucky. I took a tour of Makers Mark and Jim Beam. The Jeam Beam tour was like touring a Ford faciclty while the Makers Mark tour was like touring Aston Martin. If I get a chance Ill scan the photos and post them. The makers amrk tour was so cool, because…
At this point I'll maybe once every 2 weeks ask AI "What does this code do?" or to do brain dead text processing tasks like "rewrite this lengthy recipe to remove fluff", and I often use AI transcribed text, but not much else. Also, the AI added to UE5 is a dumb chatbot, you're better off using Google Gemini or ChatGPT.
Thanks for the reply Zach. Man, I wish the art program I attended had a focus in game production. If you don't mind me asking what is the school? Anyways, yeah, Quixel is great. It's good that they have you using photoshop in school because all those skills are essential for texturing, especially with the Quixel suite…
