In fairness max went at least 10 years without a built in way to reliably fix up broken references more than one at a time. Substance could do more to streamline the process for sure but the dependency manager does actually do what you want, it's just not feeding you the information on a plate or automating the process for… -

for real save data revocery id recomend a 3 phase backup, with a raid 1 3tb backup drive in your computer (so its 2 3tb drives) then a nas with raid whatever (4 harddrives, 2 of them are parities) and then a tape writher (there are type writers that can handle 800gb/kasette) but that option is just to be realoly fucking… -

Painted bump maps converted to normals will never replace a baked normal map, except for a flat plane(tiling texture or whatnot).
