Incase anyone comes across this: Turns out these errors were caused by deactivating the game object containing the skinned cloth without first destroying the cloth component
Skin and hair are two of the hardest materials to get right, and characters have costumes that contain lots of different materials, just as many, if not more than enviroment artists.
Hmmm, we haven't really talked much about a concept art that contain multiple characters. Is it alright if people work on different character on the same concept piece ?

Thanks Eric. the maps I've rendered out of xnormal do look cleaner but they still contain some noticeable artifacts. Not likely an issue with xnormal but with the geometry itself.

would be infinitely better on a black or dark grey background, and also if the info contained pic descriptions exif data and timestamps ain't much good for CG portfolios
