The skew direction display will not draw on faces that have UVs outside of the 0-1 area, and Toolbag will not bake normal or other map data for areas outside of 0-1, so make sure your uvs are inside the 0-1 range.
ah, ya that makes perfect sense, ya i would just check to make sure you don't end up with a vector of 0, 0, 0 and ignore the projection if you do, and just spherize.
