I see what you mean. In the sample, in vertex mode, can you add one extra vertex into the selection then change to edge and polygon mode? I wan to see what will happen. I try that in the Silo I have, but it doesn't work, the selection gets lost totally when I switch mode.
I agree as well. I actually said something similar in a video I made for him a while back. I'd rather just hit Shift F to create a new polygon, but the D and middle click works nice. Just needs to be stated. The collapse in Silo is better also, I agree. But it's coming along.

What do you mean by 'moving vert along its own axes'? How do you define axis from one single vertex. A vertex normal is defined by the average normal of the surrounding polygons. It has nothing to do with smoothing groups. Maybe I really don't quite catch what your said.
