But to get rid of those stray vertices is something really fast, 2 or 3 clicks and they're all gone. It could be faster with a script thought, something like 1 click.
@just_dragos Either spread out the edge loops, or add control (edge) loops horizontally . This is a very common question, and there are 2 other images that have the same solution on this page btw.
you are holding yourself back by trying to model it all from one piece. once you treat the shield and the metal frame as 2 objects it should be much much easier

You have n-gon at the corner. Try delete this 2 edges that going to that one vertex and insted make them come straight. I mark green how they should be like
