I graduated in scientific illustration in 1996 (or it might have been '97), not sure now. I did an animation of a flower for one of my final projects, but win 95 crashed as the moderator was coming round:)

Good skinning requires good mesh topology and smooth blending between the joints. Unfortunately, your screenshot doesn't show the topology or the weighting of the area in question. That's a great idea, I think I will do some flowers for the empty patches and some ferns for under the trees. Hopefully I can get some more progress up soon :D

It is possible to make a blendshape not transform linearly, but instead attach it to a curve which it transforms along or something? Maybe a blendshape could be combined with a deformer to get the effect? I'm trying to simulate flower petals opening, but the linear transition isn't very great for it.
