Unless your doing it for a 3D print, no need to make it air tight. Intersecting geometry and multiple elements/shells are fine. Having said that, the body should almost always be one piece when their aren't clear areas of the design to separate the parts. In your case with he bat-creature you should try merging the… -

Error in zbrush list.cpp Line:172 detect the "screwed" sub tool by clicking on any sub tool you have to determine which one causing problem. You will know that you ran into bad one because memory pop up screen will pop whenever you try to do something on that tool, if you change sub tool which is ok you will work normal… -
