OpenCanvas for $75 is fun to paint in, and has useful brush blending. What it has for me over PS is that brushes retain a good crispness even when small. Compressed charcoal sticks seem to do just fine without fixative. I have drawings 4 or 5 years old done on news print and they adhered fine. i doubt willow would do so well.
