Hey! The situation in the 3D industry right now is, mildly speaking, not good. There were a lot of factors but I'm sure you've heard about the layoffs and studio closures. What this means is that it's currently very hard to get a job as a 3D artist. I've seen people looking for jobs for way longer than 6 months, so you're…
Nice work, I like these so far! Showreel is an outdated method for showing game art, and shouldn't be used. Do you have a teacher who is telling you to make a flythrough and/or 360 spinners? I'll bet the teacher has never worked in games, or they have very little production and hiring experience. No hiring manager wants to…
Planetside Software, that's the company not the game, has released their latest terraforming software, Terragen 2.2. It's a world builder that lets you create vast realistic landscapes filled with picturesque mountains and clouds. I'll list the presser after the jump. Here's the press release: Terragen 2.2 Now Available…
So this is a weapon I'm working on for a indie game I'm helping develop. This is going to be one of the main weapons in the game. The Assault Carbine. This took me about a day and a half to complete. It has 9192 Polys. What i need help with is tips on how to make a normal map of this and how to texture I have little to no…
I'm new to the Polycount forums. I'm learning UDK in my spare time and as part of a non-credit college course. I've been working on a level making tutorial for several weeks now. I haven't finished it quite yet. As I was working on how to create a flying camera, I accidentally clicked "Game View Mode" and the whole level…
You have way too much geometry for simple objects. The wireframes show you have so many wasted vetices on flat surfaces like the desks. Fine a game where you can turn wireframe on or look through threads here on polycount to get an idea of what a low-poly should look like. You shouldn't really have any geometry that…
The rig itself looks pretty damn good, I'm not an expert rigger or even close so I can't comment on that in much detail but I have a few notes about the video itself: - The see-through wireframe is really messy, it's hard to tell what's going on there. I think you should either drop the wireframe shots or put the wires on…
Your render definitely looks much better than your wireframe shot and clears up some stuff I thought I was seeing that wasn't actually there haha. The edge flow is a bit messy, but whatever works. If this model is going into a game engine, your low poly in your wireframe shot above is simply too dense. Most of your pieces…
I know some people who use it (*cough* spacemonkey *cough*), I think he said something about highpoly meshes and not displaying wireframes, etc. Kinda makes sense, personally I just have "edged faces on selected" and that seems to work. Although I can understand if you're bringing in 2 million+ poly models all the time,…
Have you tried deleting your 6.0/prefs folder? Backup the directory, then delete it and let maya go back to default settings. If that fixes it you can copy things like your shelves from the backup into the new prefs folder. You can also do wireframes using the vector renderer. In the render properties set it to Fill…
