Are you parenting using shift>p or are you using a parent constraint? Using shift>p will always make the child inherent the transforms and rotation of the parent. If you are using parent constraint make sure that maintain offset is checked on so that it stays in place.
You can try unlinking the bones from the spine, then use the Link Constraint in the constraints menu instead. [Edit]: Well, I guess that puts it out of the hierarchy as well.

you can try using selection constraints. while in edge mode goto Select > Select using constraints> Smoothing to Hard/ smooth. Then just crease you edges base on those selection.
Thanks Guys Im gonna push the detail a lot. Im going to take you advice moosey and not connect the pieces on the base. On the constraints, I rendered these shots in smooth preview so no they dont have constraints, but thats only because I haven't actually smoothed it. It was more for conceptual purposes.
What application? In Maya, use a Parent Constraint and set the targets as the scabbard and the hand - then you can keyframe the weight between each target to control what's driving it. In Max, use a Link Constraint, add the scabbard and hand as targets, and add key frame numbers then set the weight per frame.

Rob: That seems like a really long winded way of doing things.. Just make some lights, create a camera, and use link constraints on the lights. If you're using spotlights, make sure you use a LookAt constraint (z axis) so they will point at your object if the camera pans away from it.
Did you use a path constraint? or did you convert the path to a trajectory? If you used a constraint, in the motion panel there is a "% Along Path" spinner you can animate to change the timing. If you converted the path to a trajectory then just set the options start and end times before you hit the convert button.
