I have found that in Maya using auto unwrap on very high poly objects sometimes crashes. But doing separate UV projections always works. Than go with Houdini Indie. There is a plenty of Non-Destructive stuff in it that you can latter destruct with a help of its dynamic engine. 200$ a year.
There's also LookDevX in beta, currently connected with Maya. Lucas Film said they're planning on releasing their MaterialX editor as open source. Houdini has MaterialX support.
It looks like 3ds was not meant to handle this. You need either a plugin or dedicated software (marvelous, houdini). Honestly i am not optimistic here but (as a max user) rooting for this experiment.
