These sort of threads generally pop up a couple times per year, but then drivers are released to fix the issue no? On the other hand with AMD/ATI cards, you can count on every new release to break something. =P Besides, the only cards "officially" supported by Maya are quadros and firegls. I always go nvidia for…
the gpu or the cpu? I've tried overclocking the i7 on a few occasions (mainly when I need to render something quicker) but I haven't tried anything with the 5850..too scared :P
5820 runs at a slower clock than the 4790, which means the 5820 is probably slower (or at best not significantly better) at most day-to-day tasks. On the other hand, for high end rendering the 5820 should be faster, but only if your renderer can efficiently thread all 6 cores. I think Modo's renderer is very well threaded…
This. I used to be an nvidia guy, and I probably will be in the future, but now I've been on a 5850 in windows 7, 64bit, and I've had no stability issues with work-apps. Just so much cheaper for the same power you're getting.
Okay got it working with CKohl's trick. I had to use 11-1_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe but it's working. Awesome, thanks a lot CKohl now I don't have to roll my drivers back with each game. Win7 64bit Ati Radeon 5850 Maya 2012 64bit.
Cross posting this thread I started since I eventually found a solution if it's the uv editor problem. I noticed for my Radeon 5850 specifically this problem was solved in newer versions of thier drivers. http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=90002&page=2
I have the HP envy which I find quite nice - its an i7 720 quad core with 6 gigs of ram and a dx11 ati gfx card - I think its the 5850 radeon - it didnt cost a fortune either... Also it doesnt look like garbage like most other pc laptops :P
