So I installed Diamant Tools and started working on the lowpoly. around 2k triangles so far, aiming at about 8k. I build my low poly on top of a midpoly ref in Maya. I find it helpful to continously bake the normals from the midpoly to the lowpoly to make sure Im on track - hence the wired normalmap on the image below.… -

Definitely an issue that should get more attention! Basically I'm with Chai on this one... I guess it could be argued that mapping the all-smoothed version as one continous element would elimate drawcalls as opposed to separate UV elements of the hard-edged one, but personally I'm still reluctant about taking something… -

A-Train, In this case I would build the low poly as one continous (soild) mesh. So if you where using say two seperate high poly peices (the roots, and the tree trunk) just line up the high polys together as best you can. If you bake and get a seam, just edit it out in photoshop. The uvs should be on one solid island so… -
