This is a known issue (bug) with 16 bit files. To work around it you can save an 8-bit copy of the file and use that instead. For the most part you shouldn't see a difference between 8 and 16 bit diffuse/spec maps.
Here's an update, I changed a lot of things. Next I want to tighten the fist more on the left hand, play around with the light setup more, and experiment with the spec map. Oh I also need to clean up some of the seams.
Sounds like an awesome contest. I doubt I'll have time to try to make something, but I really can't wait to see what other people come up with! EDIT: Just looked at the specs of the titan, this will REALLY be a badass contest!
Hmm, I honestly haven't really tried that.. Didn't think that would come out nice. But I could be wrong. Gotta ask someone else more experienced... Personally I use tweaked height map for spec, gloss and AO.
They're using a giant scanner and just putting it over certain areas they would like. the things spits out 8kx8k already tiled albedo righness spec and normal. Anyone who went to the quxiel booth at gdc was able to get the info
Finally got him in-game to set up the spec/gloss textures. Had to scale him up 15% to match the proper version. Now all of the bits are offset on X and Y axes by some amount. I have no idea why :/
4096x4096 is way overkill for this. There goes the texture budget for the whole level. Vehicles nowadays use 1024x (or a couple 512 sets) since you'd be using three of them... diffuse, spec, normal. Modular approach will save you tons of texture space.
Hey It looks amazing! I do, however, agree with slosh in that better material definition and work overall (mainly the organics) would make a significant difference. Some spec/gloss on the eye, lips and other materials would help alot IMO.
MUCH better. However, only the part around the knuckles is leather. The rest is all nylon. Maybe I'd tone down the spec a bit on these areas. Here's some refs I just took. Sorry, photography isn't in my skillset :P
Update: Scratches scratches everywhere. So here is the first go at making some wear and tear to the pistol. Some toning down needed here and there maybe. Too much? More? What do you think? Low + NM + DIFF + SPEC:
