Unless there is a very specific requirement for portability, i'd never suggest a laptop really. especially not a 600 quid (1000 usd) laptop. Getting a desktop will always be many times more powerful for the price. Even for mobile though? Won't a low-end laptop do? That might sound outragous but there are unexpected… -

Eric: try out dropbox as an alternative image hosting, its really easy and never resizes/recompresses your stuff. I usually do like jpeg 11(ELEVENNNNN) and end up with 600kb images and it handles it just fine, its not like people are on 56k or anything. -

Leave the resolution at 72. Even if you were rendering for print its usually faster for Maya to just render at 3 - 4 times the dimension sizes than it is to render at 300 dpi*.
