uv range is completely relative when you are talking about the mapping you want to do so there is no advantage to using the -1 to 2 range since you are wanting a uv snapshot that is in the 0 to 1 range, it's just numbers relative to where you have moved your uv's to. -1 to 2 would actually be your image tiled 3 times which… -

If you have a well set up LP mesh, you should never really need to touch bias or distance, and most of the time I leave them at 0 and 0 and get perfectly good results. The minolta 50mm 1.7 is the first lens you should buy, you can pick up a used copy for $75-100 on ebay. This lens is sharp from about F2-5.6 or so whereas teh kit zoom is sharp from about F5.6-F8 or so, which in use means you can use the 50mm in a wide variety of lighting conditions.
