Throwing a ground plane in makes sense if the ground is part of the 'occluding' geometry. Ambient occlusion is just a measure, from zero to one, of how much the near-by area lets light in to a point (where zero is no light and one is full light). You have some good detail in your painting, but you simply cannot see all the work you did because the painting came out a little blurry. You can fix this by creating a new empty layer then pressing CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + E. This creates a visible duplicate of everything in your file. Then go Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask.… -
