I disagree. One can definitely do digital art and still make money. Take XKCD or Cyanide and happiness for example. They provide free digital comics on their site for free, yet they have been successful in sell printed copies of their comics as well. Im not going for realistic legs other wise this would have been easier and I would have just copied what real legs look like(which I believe Im capable of) . Is taking commissions to make a piece of fan art illegal? I've always assumed the commissioner is responsible for copyright issues, not the commissioned. You would never get away with dropping a Superman/Batman/Yoda/Gandalf model into the middle of an MMO. Especially where they were going to be used as a trading post for villains.
