Actually it may be the fact that you're storing extra info on the blue channel. The more detailed data per channel the harsher the compression will be.

Quite the opposite. VR requires you to render 2 screens per frame. It technically cuts performance in half with current hardware.

Per Pixel is something you need to enable anyways, due to a bug with Reflection maps on certain shader setups with projections mapping.

Thanks man! The heads are rendered in Zbrush 4 with BPR. I used the traditional multi-pass method and comped them in Photoshop. :)

@KyleK - No, it isn't a post process, its a material function node so you can do it and customize it on a per material base.
