I never really understood why people do this, sure you can get a really large display this way, but you're locked at 1920x1080. Any decent 24" does 1920x1200, and decent 27's and 30's do even higher at 2560x1440 or 1600. So yeah, a 42" TV is a lot cheaper than a 30" monitor, but all you're getting is huge pixels, plus you… -

It depends on polygon budget and intended texture size. Floaters produce wasted texture space on the part of the face they cover, but those handle spikes are so small that you'd be better off having them detached.
