Just wondering,the lower section(base)of the pillar is not as details as the top part. Is that a design choice? coz ATM,it looks a little bland in the bottom,or may it could benefit from subtle weathering.

I'm trying to get a quick animation of a small plume of smoke like what I have here, and I'm happy with the shape but it comes out way too blocky and low-quality on render. Here it is in maya's viewport It's got a base resolution of 55 which I understand is low, so I would assume that's what is causing it to look so…
That's the thing - AO takes care of shading the cracks, but it doesn't occlude convex edges like the thin details of nostrils, or the up-facing edge of lower eyelids. This is basically the reason why so many "high end" games can look so cheap as far as characters are concerned, regardless of how polished the source highres…
