What texture formats does your engine support? 16 bit color usually means 5 bits each for red green and blue, and only 1 bit for alpha. That means just 2 colors, black and white, so you're going to get a horrible edge. Some 16bit formats are 4 bits for each channel, so that's 16 levels of gray for the alpha. Then you might… -

Basically what is happening is if the handle itself is a 16 sided spline (16 is an example), it goes 5 directions so 80 polygons, adding a second edge loop to the corner makes the handle 160 polygons, and adding the third loop makes it 240. Your uvs are your main concern. They need some serious redoing. They are a complete mess. Why spend all that time modeling and give little to no thought for the uvs?
