This may be a dumb question but you said it's unlit? So the lighting in the diffuse is only for that particular shot? It seems almost like a 3D painting. -

From what I know, an alpha mask should be able to work with the same UV set as your normals, diffuse, AO etc. -

Made some more pieces, I'm currently only using diffuse map, do you think normal, spec and gloss is called for? -

Specular power is too high making it look like plastic. Obviously needs a spec map but you said it was diffuse only at this point. -
